Change, A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell

I’ve been reviewing all of my writings over the past year and a half, and I realized that I wrote about changing your story, but not about change in general.

There are two types of change in life. Change that we can control, and change that is out of our control. And, often, we avoid both. Yet, change is inevitable and is so crucial in our lives.

The one thing that planned and unplanned change have in common is how we resist both, which is a complete waste of time and energy. I think this is because we often don’t see the positive that comes from change, especially if the change appears to be not so great on the surface.

But in every change, there is a positive effect.

Let’s start with the change we can control…

Is there a change you want to make in your life – a relationship, job, interest, or financial situation? Great! How do you plan on making it happen? And, no… hoping for change to happen isn’t an answer. Action is the answer.

Think about this. I hear a lot of people say that they aren’t good with change, and a lot of those people have really changed over the last five years. But, if you’re in the exact same spot in your life, your career, your relationship, etc., that you were in five years ago, you aren’t growing. We need change to accomplish growth. And we need an action plan to make that happen.

But what about unexpected changes? You know, those things that blindside us and leave us feeling completely vulnerable? So the next time you experience this, step back and think about the positive. It might be hard to pinpoint but look hard. There is opportunity in every change. And sometimes, we need the push to get our butts into gear.

I love these two quotes about change:

“When you are finished changing, you are finished.” – Benjamin Franklin

“If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.” – General Eric Shinseki

We don’t always know if a change will make things better, but I do know that we know we need to change to get better.

In the week ahead, think about what you want to change and, more importantly, what you will do to make that change happen.

Life is good. – Jeff
